REL 134 WEEK 1 Studying Religion Paper

Write a 750- to 1,050-word paper that addresses the following topics:

1. What is essential (in the practices and beliefs) for a tradition to be called a religion?

2. Illustrate your points by referring to the commonalities of the three Western religions – Judaism, Christianity
and Islam.

3. How do different fields of study approach religion as mentioned in our textbook, “Experiencing the
World’s Religions”, Chapter One under the heading “Multidisciplinary Approaches to the Study of Religion?

4. What are some critical issues in the academic study of religion as mentioned in our textbook, “Experiencing the
World’s Religions”, Chapter One under the heading “Key Critical Issues”?

Include specific examples from the various religious traditions described in the Week 1 readings, such as a belief in one God or many gods and goddesses, church on Sunday, holy mountains, or the Quakers calling each other friends. You may also include examples from your own religious tradition or another religious tradition with which you are familiar. Format your entire paper consistent with APA guidelines, including the title page, in-text citations and references. A title page usually includes: Paper Title, Student Name, Course, Due Date (spelled out), and Faculty Name. Remember academic papers have an introduction and a conclusion. When using our textbook, other materials, resources or quotations which are NOT your OWN original ideas, then you must cite that material within your paper and include those sources on a separate reference page at the end of your paper.  Otherwise, it is considered plagiarism. For help on APA, click on the Center for Writing Excellence, and under “Useful Links” at the bottom of the left side, click on “APA Information.”  Word count does not include the title page, citations or reference page. There will be no penalty for exceeding 1,050 words, but a deduction will apply for papers less than 750 words.Review the Written Assignment Feedback Form for grading criteria.
